Travel at Your Leisure - Amazing Amalfi spent a fascinating day in Minturnae and Sessa Arrunca, just north of Naples. Our guide Luigi, a Professor of Archaeology, showed us around the seemingly forgotten site of Minturnae. Having already visited Pompeii with its massive footprint and crowds to match, Minturnae offered a much more intimate and in depth look at everyday life in Roman Italy. With its beautifully preserved theatre, which has perfect acoustics, as well as the remains of the defensive castle, forum, baths and much more, it was a really special experience. Please check out the website below for more information on Minturnae.
Our guru Luigi, was incredibly knowledgable, not to mention charming and we were all very appreciative of his time and tolerance. However, one of the best parts of the day came when we all packed up to move on to the next site - Sessa Arunca - and our trusted Archaeological guru jumped into his own vehicle to lead the way. Can you pick the Archaeologist's preferred mode of transport? It's not too hard is it?
How Time Team is That?
Already famous for its beaches, creative gastronomy and top class hospitality, San Sebastian (Donastia in local dialect) has been named as European Capital of Culture for 2016. They selected a theme of peace, taking the slogan ‘Waves of Energy, Culture to Overcome Violence” to the selection jury and are putting together a year long program of arts and entertainment based around this.
Way back in the dark ages of high school, the first Latin phrase we ever learned was "Caeculius est in foro", and whenever I am in Rome it is the first thing that springs to mind.
The forum is amazing, but there is so much else to see. Yesterday I wandered sound the Aventine Hill and then across to the Capitiline Hill above the forum, where this picture was taken.
I also managed to squeeze in the Capitiline Museums and the Pantheon - as stunningly simple and beautiful as ever - before repairing to the roof top bar of the Hotel Minerva, overlooking Bernini's little elephant, for a well deserved spritz at sunset.
A bit busy I know, but luckily Travel at Your Leisure's Amazing Amalfi tour starts tomorrow, so from then on things will move at a slower pace.
